OUR BOARD MEMBERS

MS. SALLY JOAN BAKER, HOST/PRODUCER, Ms. Baker has received 32 awards including Profiles of Excellence Award, from KGO, Channel 7; a Bay Area Local Heroes Award, from KQED, Channel 9 and Union Bank of California; an Alameda County Arts Leadership Award; a For Those Who Care Award, from KRON, Channel 4; a Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award; a Golden Rule Award, from JC Penney; 3 Staff Recognition Awards, from the University of California Berkeley; among many others. Ms. Baker holds a California Teaching Credential; has extensive experience in TV and radio as a host, producer, anchorwoman, narrator, actress, and motivational speaker. Stories have appeared about her work in newspapers and magazines across the country. Ms. Baker is a strong supporter of underpriveleged children and helping them through reading/poetry.

MR. ADNAN S. TOUMA, DIRECTOR, Mr. Touma is Technical Writer and Videographer who directs the WEE POETS Internship Training Program at Berkeley Community Media, Channel 28, Berkeley. He videotapes children at after-school programs and on-site locations. He is a WEE POETS Board Member, Treasurer, and Bookkeeper. He holds a B.A. and a M.S. Degree in Industrial Design from San Francisco State University. He retired as an Architectural Engineer CAD Specialist at the Presidio Trust, San Francisco. A story about his WEE POETS achievements appeared in the PRESIDIO PROFILES Newsletter. Mr. Touma is the recipient of Heroes in Education Award, from the California Lottery; a WEE POETS Achievement Award; a Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award; a Golden Rule Award, from JC Penney; We Couldn’t Have Done It Without You Award, from Stagebridge Oakland.

MS. JENNIFER NUTT, SECRETARY/BOARD MEMBER, Ms. Nutt serves as Secretary for Wee Poets and has been a Board Member for over ten years. Ms. Nutt works as a Lawyer in San Francisco Bay Area.

MS. SHARON WOOLARD, BOARD MEMBER, Ms. Sharon Woolard has been a teacher for the West Contra Costa School District for 35 years. Ms. Woolard is interested in literacy and technology which is one of the reasons why she supports Wee Poets as a Board Member. Sharon has a daughter, Erin, who worked on Wee Poets. Sharon hopes that Wee Poets will continue to be a valuable option for children to demonstrate their writing talent as well as learn technical skills that will prepare them for future jobs.

MS. KATRINA PETERS, BOARD MEMBER, Ms. Peters has served for over three years as a Wee Poets Board Member. Ms. Peters also works as a Psychiatrist in the San Francisco Bay Area.

MR. JOHN BISHOP, BOARD MEMBER, Mr. Bishop became a Board Member for Wee Poets last year and brings his experience to assist in progressing the Mission and Vision of Wee Poets for the future. Mr. Bishop works as an Accountant in the San Francisco Bay Area.

MR. MARTIN MEJIA, BOARD MEMBER, Mr. Mejia is the most recent addition to Wee Poets. He joined last year to support Wee Poets as a Board Member. He works full-time as a Personal Banker in the San Francisco Bay Area.

OUR HISTORY

1984 - Wee Poets was created.

 

1986 - President Ronald Reagan invited Wee Poets to the White House in Washington D.C. to receive a $10,000 award. The award check was given to the NAACP Act-So Program.

 

1987 - KRON-TV of San Francisco presented a $2,000 check as part of the "For Those Who Care" Award to Host Sally Baker. Betty White, who is a Hollywood star, presented award to Sally.

 

1995 - Wee Poets was invited to Runaway Bay, Jamaica as an exchange writing project. Wee Poets was produced in the local schools.

 

1997 - Wee Poets was invited to Paris, France as an exchange writing project. Wee Poets was produced in the local schools.

 

2005 - The California Lottery, in Hollywood, CA presented a "Heroes in Education" Award to Adnan Touma. Jamie Farr, who is a Hollywood star, presented the award to Adnan.

 

2014 - Comcast TV and the Oakland Tribune Newspaper presented a "Local Heroes" Award to Sally and Adnan.

 

2015 - Wee Poets celebrated its 31st Year Anniversary.

 

 

ABOUT US

WEE POETS is an organization that seeks to improve children’s literacy skills, through creation and interpretation of poetry in a multimedia environment. During the past 31 years, 32,000 children have appeared on the program. Over 400 youth have completed the free, internship training program as Television Technicians, continued on to college, majored in multimedia, created their own TV programs and/or obtained jobs at TV stations.
